Our role as custodians
Our collections form an important centre for research into the history of the veterinary profession. We are committed to our role as custodians of this history, a role we fulfil through three broad functions:
Acquiring: We proactively collect paper and digital material from both internal and external sources, securing important veterinary collections for prosperity.
Preserving: Our collections are stored in optimum conditions, in line with best practice in heritage preservation. Paper-based material are kept in acid-free packaging, inside climate-control storerooms. Copies of digital documents are stored in a range of locations to minimise the risk of loss or corruption.
Sharing: We make details of our collections available via our online catalogue. Additionally, digital copies of selected papers can be accessed via our Vet History website. We further engage with our research community by answering enquiries and welcoming in-person researchers, as well as utilising various media to share stories from our collections.
Access to our archive materials is by appointment only. Our team are available at our Hardwick Street office from 9.30am-4pm Monday to Friday.
As much of our material is held off site, please contact us in advance to arrange a visit, together with a list of the material you would like to see. Email archives@rcvsknowledge.org
The Hardwick Street office offers study space within the public area, with wifi access.
