Making the case for QI

RCVS Knowledge’s partnership with Nottingham University to create a veterinary quality improvement model that provides proven return on investment.

Project summary

RCVS Knowledge is working with the University of Nottingham to develop a novel evidence-based model for quality improvement (QI) that is specific to veterinary care. The model will provide a proven return on investment for veterinary practices and animal owners.

Background

There is increased demand for veterinary teams to provide more efficient and effective care on a sustainable basis. At the same time, veterinary professionals need to ensure high levels of animal welfare, team welfare and client satisfaction.

Over recent years a growing number and range of veterinary teams have embraced QI techniques to make systematic, measurable improvements to their practice. However, there is no sector-specific evidence-based model that demonstrates return on investment of QI. This project will develop a robust model that fulfils this purpose.

Aims

The aim of the project is to create an evidence-based QI model that provides proven benefits to animal owners and vet practices. It will equip RCVS Knowledge with the expertise to provide practices across the industry with tailored support to fully embed and maximise value from QI initiatives.

Approach

The project is a three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), which is funded by UKRI Innovate UK. It will enable RCVS Knowledge and the University of Nottingham to integrate highly specialised expertise in Quality Improvement (QI) with rigorous study design, working with a variety of veterinary organisations, practice groups and animal owners.

The QI model will initially be tested against calf pneumonia in farm practice, given this is a significant issue that affects animal health and welfare, productivity, sustainability and economic viability. The team will use robust methodology to measure the cost of making the changes against the benefits it brings. The model will then be refined based on lessons learned before it is rolled out to all types of practice.

In short, the project seeks to address the challenge of QI through collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and the development of practical QI and evidence-based solutions.

We are delighted to be forging this unique partnership with RCVS Knowledge that provides an opportunity to develop bespoke training to assist veterinary professionals in their quest to deliver quality veterinary care for better patient outcomes, and more efficient and sustainable practice.”
